Overall Project Category recognize BC&E members
The Building Congress & Exchange has been honoring the men and women behind a project’s craftsmanship for 81 years. This year, the association added another component to the signature project with the new Overall Project Award, which recognizes the general contractors who make it all happen.
BC&E received 10 nominations for this newly-created award. The nominees had a significant number of BC&E members that worked on those projects. We are pleased to highlight the nominees and the winners in The Exchange.
And the winners are…

Guinness Open Gate Brewery and Barrel House

At the former Calvert Distillery, Plano-Coudon renovated 70,000 square feet in two existing buildings to create two custom brewhouses for Guinness Blonde and its small-batch products, packaging and warehousing facilities. The project also included a visitor center with a tasting room, multiple bars, restaurant, event space, exhibit areas, gift shop and outdoor amenities on the 62-acre site.
As the first Guinness facility constructed in America in 63 years, Open Gate was envisioned as a landmark property and a destination for Guinness fans.
To achieve that vision, Plano-Coudon and its local project partners engaged in close collaboration with Diageo and its international branding, hospitality and architecture firms on this more than $35 million project.

The Five Arts and Student Center, St. Timothy’s School

This $9.7 million renovation involved demolishing over half of a building constructed 50 years ago, renovating the remainder, and adding 12,500 square feet of new building. The existing building provided many unique challenges including gypsum roof deck, dox plank slabs, structural CMU walls, and small clearances. This required tradesmen to adapt to existing conditions and have exquisite coordination skills.
The final product includes modern technology coupled with high level finishes including copper siding, fiber cement siding, custom millwork, terrazzo, wood ceilings, custom light fixtures and artistic fabric wrapped panels.

City House

City House is a $2 million renovation of a historic 20th century Greystone mansion in Baltimore’s Mt. Vernon neighborhood.
Throughout this project, the trades exhibited thoughtful and meticulous craftsmanship with each element from stone, millwork and cabinet hardware to updating the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology with modern efficiencies — ultimately enhancing the quality of the entire project. Every room includes detailed plaster work, multiple pocket doors, refurbished hardwood floors, a grand staircase and original marble. All those who were involved in the renovation sought to keep as many of the historic features as possible.
