Building Congress & Exchange Honors Baltimore’s Award-Winning Craftsmen

The Building Congress & Exchange honored more than 50 talented craftsmen within 11 categories at the 83rd Annual Craftsmanship Awards held October 14 at the Mt. Washington Mill Dye House. The winners represented 19 companies in the Baltimore Metropolitan area.

The Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sheppard Pratt Health System Behavioral Health each won an Overall Building Award honoring general contractors Clark/Ulliman Schutte and Lewis Contractors respectively.

In addition, the BC&E Foundation awarded $1,000 scholarships to four promising high school students who are pursuing careers, training or degrees in the construction and design fields. This year’s winners are from different high schools but all are honing their skills at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center.

The Craftsmanship Awards have been a long-standing tradition honoring and recognizing exemplary craftsmanship within the construction industry.

This year, BC&E received 40 nominations, which were each carefully reviewed by our 11-person Craftsmanship Committee. The winners were determined based on quality of work, the complexity of both technical and design challenges and the level of difficulty from certain conditions.

Building Congress & Exchange Recognizes Craftsmen with Annual Awards

(Hanover, Md. Nov. 9, 2020) –– The Building Congress & Exchange (BC&E) honored and recognized the extraordinary skill and talent from the construction and design industry at the 82nd Annual Craftsmanship Awards on Nov. 5 held virtually. The winners represent all facets of the industry.

Earlier this year, members of the BC&E Craftsmanship Committee judged 35 nominations that ranged from specialty painting and lighting to HVAC, carpentry, stone and iron work. Each nominated work was judged based on overall craftsmanship including the quality of work, complexity of both technical and design challenges and the level of difficulty.

While the arrival of COVID-19 in March and the restrictions that followed eliminated the possibility of an in-person celebration, the Craftsmanship Committee and BC&E had no intention of letting a worldwide pandemic stop the organization’s 80+ year tradition of celebrating the best in craftsmanship.

“From the beginning of this pandemic, our industry was deemed essential — and that’s for a reason,” said Craftsmanship Committee Chair Thomas Koch of Plano-Coudon Construction. “The construction industry is the foundation of our community. The men and women who create, build, refurbish and rejuvenate our communities are essential.”

A complete list of winners is below.

This year, BC&E also inducted two craftsmen into the Master Craftsmen category. David Contrino of Henry J. Knott Masonry, Inc. and Vern Quesenberry of Ruff Roofers, Inc. have both earned five craftsmanship awards during their careers, putting them into this elite group.
In addition, BC&E recognized three Overall Buildings: Maximón (General Contractor: F.M. Harvey Construction Co., Inc.); Dundalk Elementary School Replacement (General Contractor: North Point Builders of Maryland, LLC); and Mercy Medical Center – Bunting 17 COVID Fit Out (General Contractor: The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company). This awards category gives much-deserved recognition to the general contractors that make the projects happen.

During the event, the Building Congress & Exchange Foundation also honored three promising high school students with the Future Craftsman and Design Award: Jacob Bently of Lansdowne High School for electrical; Thomas Krieger of Liberty High School for welding; and Sean Marlatt of Century High School for HVAC. In addition to recognition for their achievements, these students also receive scholarships to pursue further training, degrees or to purchase supplies to begin work in the construction or design field.

A full recording of the event can be found on the BC&E YouTube Channel.
