Building Congress & Exchange Recognizes Craftsmen with Annual Awards

BC&E News | November 06, 2018

The Building Congress & Exchange (BC&E) honored and recognized the extraordinary skill and talent of 20 individuals from the construction and design industry at the 80th Annual Craftsmanship Awards on Nov. 1 at the Columbus Center. The winners represent all facets of the industry.

Over two days in June, the Craftsmanship Committee judged nearly 40 nominations that included lighting, HVAC, carpentry, stone and iron work. Each nominated project was judged based on overall craftsmanship including the quality of work, complexity of both technical and design challenges, and the level of difficulty.

During the evening, the Building Congress & Exchange Foundation also honored four promising high school students with Future Craftsman and Design Awards: Michael Briggs from Manchester Valley High School, for Masonry; Michael Fulton from Century High School, for Welding; Braden Lau from Westminster High School, for Welding; and Gregory Mullinix from Francis Scott Key High School, for Masonry. In addition to recognition for their achievements, these students also receive scholarships to pursue further training, degrees or supplies to begin work in the construction or design field.

For the third year, the Building Congress & Exchange awarded the Judge’s Choice Award, which recognizes the best craftsmanship of the 20 winners. This year’s award recipient was Karl Kress from Henry J. Knott Masonry, Inc. for his Unit Masonry & Exterior Stone work on JHU Krieger Hall.

The fourth annual Rising Star Award, which recognizes an outstanding young craftsman who exceeds their company’s expectations and shows exceptional skills and promise in the industry, was awarded to Nicholas Jeffers, Fabricator with Baltimore Fabrication.
